1988 – 1992: Sculpture – “ Ok, this is cool, I can draw and make it 3-D!”
1992 – 1997: Watercolor – “Not enough space for sculpture, watercolor is good"
1997 – 2005: Pure watercolor gets boring; start mixing in layers of acrylic. “ I like this."
2005 – 2010: Mixed Media Happens! “ Collage is awesome!”
2010 - 2016: Still working mixed media, but clay has arrived! Combining mixed media and clay. "Now this has possibilities!"
This is a simplified time line of how my art has evolved. I would classify myself as a three-dimensional mixed media artist. I enjoy working with many mediums and combining them in a variety of ways. I have come full circle, combining my college sculpture background with my drawing and painting days to create pieces today made up of layers and dimensions. Dress patterns, pen and ink, transparencies, and text have been some of the materials in my work.
More recently, I have been working with clay, screen printing, and image transfers, to recreate my collage images three dimensionally. I want depth, with the look of texture, but on a smooth surface. This current endeavor has been exciting and interesting. Each piece is unique with a variety of techniques.
Creating art for me is about the composition. The composition needs to make the viewers eyes happy. After the initial glance, it is the material and the techniques that will hold the viewers attention. Art is first about good composition, then mastering the techniques, and lastly, bending, twisting, and combining those techniques to create something unique.
